[edit] Markings
The Peugeot grinding mechanism always has the following text pressed into the metal:
Peugeot Freres LION
Occasionally the script on earlier grinders can lead to it being misread as "Geugeot".
In addition to the text, there is an icon of a lion standing on top of an arrow.
[edit] Variations
Early versions of the Dansk Designs mills used the grinding mechanism much like it was being used in Peugeot's own mills. The fixed grinding sheath on the bottom of the mill has two rectangular cutouts in it that are used in unison with a "U" shaped metal band to affix it to the bottom of the peppermill and prevent it from rotating. On later Dansk mills, that same sheath has had both of the cutouts ground down, creating a circle with two large flats on it. The peppermill then had a similar pocket created in it, so no band (or screws) would be necessary to prevent rotation. The sheath is typically not held in place by glue (or other method of adhesion). Instead, the pocket is usually a press fit, and the second portion of the grinding mechanism (attached to the shaft) is glued into the top of the mill. This construction method holds true even for the Peugeot mechanisms that have the black plastic ring fill.
[edit] Band
The bands used to retain the early Peugeot mechanisms seem to have only one of three markings: "Made in France", "Peugeot (F)s", or the Lion-on-arrow symbol plus "Lion."
